00:13 (speaking in foreign language)
00:20 - And welcome to Fast Talk with Boy Abunda.
00:28 (speaking in foreign language)
00:32 At YouTube.
00:34 (speaking in foreign language)
00:37 One of the clearest and indicators
00:49 (speaking in foreign language)
00:53 Christmas has begun in our country
01:01 where we have the longest celebration of Christmas.
01:05 (speaking in foreign language)
01:09 Please welcome Joe Marichan.
01:18 (crowd cheering)
01:20 - Thank you, boy.
01:21 Thank you.
01:22 Thank you very much, Joe.
01:23 - It's great to be here.
01:24 It's great to see you again.
01:26 - I know, it's been quite a while.
01:27 And Merry Christmas.
01:28 - Merry Christmas to you too.
01:30 - Please, Joe.
01:31 - Okay.
01:32 - It's been quite a while.
01:34 (speaking in foreign language)
01:38 How have you been?
01:41 - I've become a grandfather of nine.
01:44 - Sham.
01:45 - Sham, the grandchildren.
01:46 - Okay.
01:47 - My wife and I are married 53 years, thank God.
01:50 - Wow.
01:51 - To the same woman.
01:53 - Wow.
01:53 - Yeah, thank God.
01:55 So, and I've been busy with work.
01:57 - Right.
01:58 - With the business.
01:59 - Yeah, okay.
02:00 But talking about busy,
02:02 (speaking in foreign language)
02:03 Joe, how busy are you?
02:06 - Well, this Christmas,
02:08 I'll be very busy with several endorsements,
02:11 commercial endorsements,
02:12 and a few shows.
02:14 I'm doing five cities in Canada.
02:17 - Wow.
02:18 - With the Canadian.
02:19 - Wow.
02:20 - Thank God, thank God indeed.
02:21 And then I'm going to have a mall show tonight
02:25 at Festival Mall in Alabang.
02:28 - All right, you're both.
02:29 - So from here, I go straight there.
02:31 - Now, I can imagine,
02:33 (speaking in foreign language)
02:37 Christmas parties, family gatherings.
02:41 You get a lot of these invitations.
02:43 - Yes.
02:44 - And I can imagine also how you manage your schedule.
02:48 - Well, I have to adjust according to my schedule.
02:52 - Right.
02:53 - I mean, you cannot please everyone.
02:55 (laughing)
02:56 (speaking in foreign language)
02:59 The very first time, Joe,
03:00 you saw the memes on social media,
03:03 take me back to that moment.
03:05 (speaking in foreign language)
03:06 - Yeah, I was confused as to how to react to that.
03:10 And I never knew who it was that created those memes.
03:14 And I've tried to find out, but unsuccessful.
03:17 So until now, I don't know who made those memes.
03:21 - Okay.
03:21 (speaking in foreign language)
03:26 - Except that there was one that was quite irreverent.
03:29 (laughing)
03:30 - All right.
03:30 - You don't mind if I tell you.
03:32 - No, no, no, I don't mind.
03:32 - It was irreverent because it showed St. Joseph
03:36 and Mother Mary riding a donkey.
03:39 And she was pregnant, of course.
03:41 And then he says, Jose Marie Chan.
03:46 (laughing)
03:48 - You know, anything can happen on social media.
03:50 - I know, I know.
03:51 - I know that some people would even call you
03:52 the King of Christmas.
03:53 And they'd rather be identified as the little drummer boy
03:56 of Christmas.
03:57 - Yes.
03:58 - You didn't like that, why?
03:59 - No, because there's only one King of Christmas
04:01 and that's our Lord Jesus Christ, the baby Jesus.
04:05 Some people call me Chanta Claus.
04:09 (laughing)
04:10 - No, let's look at some memes.
04:13 Ah, here, oh there, just a warm up.
04:15 (laughing)
04:17 Okay, and then.
04:21 (speaking in foreign language)
04:25 Peeping through the window.
04:36 (speaking in foreign language)
04:37 There, September now.
04:39 (laughing)
04:41 But I wanna go to the story, Joe, of the song,
04:49 Christmas in Our Hearts.
04:51 (speaking in foreign language)
04:54 The melody itself, boy, was composed in 1988
04:59 to a poem written by my good friend,
05:01 Chari Cruz Zarate,
05:04 (speaking in foreign language)
05:06 which he used as a high school jubilee song.
05:11 - Okay.
05:12 - So I wrote that melody and I never thought
05:15 that two years later, I was going to use that melody
05:19 for a Christmas song when Universal Records,
05:23 the recording company that I record for,
05:25 approached me and said, "It's time we do a Christmas album
05:29 "because of the success of Beautiful Girl,
05:32 "Please Be Careful With My Heart,
05:33 "My Girl, My Woman, Constant Change."
05:35 (speaking in foreign language)
05:36 Yeah, so then I thought of that melody
05:39 and I got a friend of mine, Rina Canisa,
05:43 to come to the house, I gave her the melody
05:45 and together we worked on the lyrics.
05:48 So that's the birth--
05:48 - Wonderful. - Yeah.
05:50 - Okay, so Rina collaborated with you
05:53 on the lyrics. - On the lyrics.
05:54 (speaking in foreign language)
05:55 - Yes. - Okay.
05:56 So after you did the song, go ahead with the story.
05:59 You asked some people to-- - Yes.
06:02 - Sing the song with you.
06:03 - Yeah, at that time, Lea Salonga was a hit
06:06 from, because of Miss Saigon.
06:08 So I approached her and asked her
06:11 if she would do a duet with me.
06:13 And Sabiha, "Yes, I'll be glad to."
06:15 She heard the song and she liked the melody,
06:18 she liked the words, except that her recording company
06:21 would not allow her to record for a competing label.
06:26 Oh, so my next choice was Monique Wilson,
06:30 who was an understudy of Miss Saigon.
06:33 - At that time, I was managing Monique.
06:35 - Okay, and I like her.
06:37 She's a very nice person with a beautiful voice.
06:40 Unfortunately, that weekend, she went to Tagaytay
06:45 and you know the story.
06:46 - Yes. - She lost her voice.
06:47 - She lost her voice.
06:48 - She called me, so sometimes I guess the Holy Spirit
06:53 was leading me towards my daughter.
06:55 - Right.
06:57 - Yeah, because then she was, you know,
06:59 since the Universal Records people were rushing,
07:02 "Joe, it's already October.
07:04 "We have to come up with the album."
07:07 And so I went to my daughter's bedroom and I said,
07:11 "Liz, what are you doing?"
07:14 She says, "I'm cramming for my exams."
07:17 "Okay, can you learn the song quickly?
07:21 "'Cause I'd like to record this with you."
07:23 "Oh, okay, when?"
07:25 "This Wednesday."
07:27 - Okay.
07:28 - And so to make a long story short,
07:29 she and I went into a recording studio
07:32 and the rest is history, boy.
07:34 - Tama ka dyan, Joe.
07:36 Pero, Joe, when you were doing the song,
07:38 when you were writing with Rina,
07:40 when you got that melody from another song
07:43 that you composed, - Ang tubig ay buhay.
07:44 - Ang tubig ay buhay,
07:46 did you have a sense
07:48 that this was going to be a massive hit?
07:51 - No, I never expected it.
07:53 As a matter of fact,
07:54 the producers at Universal Records said,
07:57 "Joe, masyadong Christian song ang itong kantan to.
08:02 "Why don't you come up with a romantic Christmas song?"
08:06 Sabi ko, "Oh, okay.
08:08 "When do you need it?"
08:10 "Next week na sana."
08:11 So.
08:12 - Joe, maraming mga composers,
08:14 maraming mga batang kompositor
08:16 ang nakikinig atagpamasin sa ating pag-uusap ngayon.
08:19 For, without having to be intrusive,
08:22 you know, for something as big as Christmas in our hearts,
08:26 ang isang artist ba,
08:28 ang isang kompositor,
08:30 kumikita ba ng napakalaking pera?
08:32 - Not anymore, boy.
08:35 Not anymore, because the technology has changed.
08:38 - Okay.
08:39 - Nobody buys records,
08:41 nobody buys CDs,
08:42 nobody buys cassettes anymore.
08:45 So, we earn a little bit from Spotify,
08:47 not too much.
08:48 - Right.
08:49 - And also from endorsements,
08:52 and doing shows.
08:54 That's all.
08:55 - And of course, the thing is,
08:56 pag nakikita ka na, Joe,
08:58 Pasko na.
08:59 (laughs)
09:01 - How nice to be associated with the Christmas season.
09:04 - Right.
09:04 - I mean, it's the biggest season in the Philippines,
09:07 and it's the best loved season.
09:10 - Tama ka dun.
09:11 And this is what we're gonna do.
09:14 We're gonna do fast talk.
09:15 You haven't done this with me.
09:17 - Okay, no, this is my first time.
09:19 - Yes, I know.
09:20 (laughs)
09:21 And--
09:22 - Good thing I have my running shoes.
09:23 (laughs)
09:24 - We have two minutes to do this,
09:25 and our time begins now.
09:27 Joe, Merry Christmas or Perfect Christmas?
09:30 - Merry Christmas.
09:30 - Sisilip or maiidlip?
09:32 - Sisilip.
09:33 - Pasko or paksiw?
09:35 - Pasko, of course.
09:36 - Hamon or mamon?
09:37 - Mamon.
09:38 - Queso de bola or mambobola?
09:40 - Queso de bola.
09:41 - Singer or songwriter?
09:42 - Both.
09:43 - Favoritong handa sa noche buena?
09:46 - Macaroni salad.
09:47 - Laging niregalo tuwing Pasko?
09:50 - Pera.
09:50 - Ilan ang inaanak mo?
09:52 - Oh, I cannot count anymore, boy.
09:54 - Panalong kanta or panalong negosyo?
09:57 - Panalong negosyo.
09:59 - Good father or good provider?
10:01 - Always a good father.
10:02 - Cool lolo or cool performer?
10:05 - Cool lolo.
10:06 - Mabait na asawa or takot kay asawa?
10:09 - Mabait na asawa.
10:10 - Favorite singer na nakatrabaho mo?
10:12 - Regine Velasquez.
10:13 - My girl, my woman, or my friend?
10:15 - My friend.
10:17 - Please be careful with my heart or deep in my heart?
10:21 - Deep in my heart.
10:22 - One thing you're not good at?
10:24 - I don't know how to cook.
10:26 (laughing)
10:28 - Learn or teach?
10:30 - Learn.
10:30 - Give or take?
10:32 - Give.
10:33 - Old or new?
10:34 - New.
10:36 - Advice to your young self?
10:38 - Continue to be generous with those in need.
10:42 - When in doubt, what do you do?
10:44 - You pray.
10:45 - Huling pinagdasal sa Diyos?
10:48 - I'm praying for our country,
10:50 that our people will be lifted out of poverty.
10:54 - Lights on or lights off?
10:55 - Sorry?
10:56 - Lights on or lights off?
10:58 - Lights on.
10:59 - Happiness or chocolates?
11:00 - Happiness.
11:01 - Best time for happiness?
11:03 - In the morning, at sunrise.
11:05 - Complete this, a perfect Christmas is?
11:09 - Is being with family.
11:11 (applauding)
11:13 - What is your Christmas wish this year?
11:18 - My Christmas wish is that for our economy to improve.
11:21 - It's really a country?
11:22 - Yeah.
11:23 - What about a personal wish?
11:24 - My personal wish is continued good health
11:27 and happiness with our family,
11:29 with our children and grandchildren.
11:31 (speaking in foreign language)
11:35 (upbeat music)
11:41 - Merry Christmas.
11:42 (speaking in foreign language)
11:45 (speaking in foreign language)
11:47 I have this impression that you spend a lot of time abroad.
11:50 - Not really, no.
11:51 My business requires me to be here.
11:54 And of course my family.
11:56 But when we do go out,
11:58 I try to make sure that I'm with the family.
12:00 We travel together.
12:02 - You know, we got this question from social media.
12:04 (speaking in foreign language)
12:08 (laughing)
12:11 Can you answer that, Joe?
12:12 (speaking in foreign language)
12:13 Chan from January to August.
12:16 (laughing)
12:18 - I'm either at home or at work in my business.
12:22 - Right.
12:22 (speaking in foreign language)
12:26 Are not familiar that you are actually in business
12:29 and you do your music.
12:32 - Yes, because especially now,
12:34 with the technology change,
12:36 it's very hard to live on music.
12:40 That's why my advice to the young composers,
12:43 young singers, is that use that as a hobby or on the side,
12:47 but get another career,
12:50 either in law or accounting or medicine,
12:53 and then just do music on the side.
12:56 Don't lose it completely
12:58 because that's God's given gift to you.
13:00 - Okay, so you're a musician.
13:02 That's God's given gift to you.
13:04 Okay.
13:05 You know, you're considered to be
13:08 (speaking in foreign language)
13:09 one of the pillars.
13:10 (speaking in foreign language)
13:11 Original Filipino music, OPM.
13:13 Joe, how is OPM today?
13:18 - OPM is still very much alive,
13:21 except that the platform is no longer there to promote.
13:26 Unlike, you know, when I started,
13:29 there were seven recording companies
13:31 fighting for your song, fighting for you.
13:33 But nowadays, it's difficult now
13:36 because the business has changed.
13:38 The business model has changed.
13:39 The platform is no longer there.
13:42 - And we all embrace it.
13:43 We're adapting.
13:44 (speaking in foreign language)
13:46 Because during the times when you were beginning,
13:50 music business is so different.
13:52 - Yes, yes.
13:53 And I had a lot of TV shows where I appeared in to promote,
13:58 and then I go to record bars
14:00 to sign autograph for those who are buying my CDs or records.
14:04 But you know, the vinyl record is coming back.
14:07 - It is.
14:08 - Vinyl record, more expensive.
14:10 (speaking in foreign language)
14:12 You know, the more choices we have, the better.
14:14 Let's go to your process.
14:16 Let's go to the way you make music.
14:18 I mean, outside of Christmas in our hearts.
14:20 Usually, Joe, (speaking in foreign language)
14:23 How do you do it?
14:24 - Almost always, it's the melody.
14:27 - You hear that?
14:28 - Yeah, sometimes I hear that at night,
14:31 and I tell myself, "Ah, tomorrow morning when I wake up,
14:35 "I'm going to write it down or record it."
14:38 Almost always, boy, like a song in the night, it disappears.
14:43 That's why from now on, every time I hear a melody,
14:47 I have to sing it right away and write it down.
14:50 - Okay, so--
14:51 - So that I don't lose the melody.
14:53 And then the lyrics come afterwards.
14:55 - Interesting.
14:56 Really interesting.
14:58 Inspiration.
14:59 - The inspiration is, you know,
15:01 there's so much in life, boy, that can inspire me.
15:05 Sometimes my children, my grandchildren,
15:09 they inspire me to write songs for them.
15:12 Like in my latest Christmas CD,
15:15 I sing with my granddaughter.
15:18 - Wow.
15:20 - A song of the firefly.
15:23 I'll send you a copy of the CD.
15:25 - A song of the firefly. - Of the firefly.
15:28 So you continue to write music?
15:29 - Yes, as much as I can, I try to continue writing.
15:34 I never give up.
15:35 - Your grandchildren, how proud are they of Lolo?
15:40 - Well, they all can carry a tune.
15:44 They sing very well.
15:45 Yes, my grandchildren, thank God.
15:48 And sometimes when I have a show, I get them to sing along.
15:52 - You have that distinct voice.
15:55 You know, that's the equity.
15:57 I mean, we're talking about brand.
16:00 Your brand equity is that soothing voice.
16:02 You don't make mistakes with other people's voices.
16:05 The moment you started singing, that's Joe Maritchan.
16:08 Is that inborn?
16:09 I mean, did you train?
16:11 How did it happen?
16:12 - I never get a vocal coach all my life.
16:15 - Really?
16:15 - Yeah.
16:16 - Wow.
16:17 - Since I was a little boy, I would sing along to the radio,
16:20 you know, to the songs that I heard on radio.
16:23 And then at one time, I even performed
16:26 in a children's hour show in Iloilo City.
16:29 - But do you have rituals?
16:30 Like, can you drink cold water before a concert?
16:33 How do you take care of the voice?
16:34 - Usually, before a concert,
16:35 I would vocalize for about an hour.
16:38 - Oh, okay.
16:40 - And I would clear my nose so that I can breathe normally.
16:44 And then I also have an idiot board
16:47 so that sometimes I forget my own lyrics
16:50 and at my age, boy, sometimes I'm forgetful.
16:52 - That's okay.
16:53 Streisand does it.
16:54 (laughs)
16:55 (speaks in foreign language)
16:56 that we began our Christmas celebration
16:58 with you here on Fast Talk.
17:00 - Thank you.
17:00 What an honor.
17:01 (audience cheers)
17:02 Thank you.
17:03 What an honor for me, boy,
17:04 that I was asked to guest in your show.
17:07 - No.
17:08 - Fast Talk.
17:09 - The honor is also ours.
17:10 (speaks in foreign language)
