A burst of cooler air is slashing temperatures across part of the central U.S., and the cooldown will be preceded by severe thunderstorms in some areas.
Transcript
00:00 No secret, it's been hot across the middle of the country and it remains hot today.
00:06 92 in Peoria, 93 in Chicago, 96 in Kansas City, and 94 as we look toward Des Moines.
00:14 You'll notice though, Des Moines and Springfield, even St. Louis and Indy with a thunderstorm
00:19 icon in your AccuWeather exclusive forecast.
00:22 We are looking at some thunderstorms as a cold front presses across the middle of the
00:25 country and this front means business in the way that we could see severe weather.
00:30 Now we have two levels of risk on this Tuesday stretching from the afternoon into the evening.
00:35 You'll notice the first is in yellow, that's some risk for spotty severe weather.
00:39 That stretches all the way from Abilene, Texas to Tulsa, Kansas City back to Des Moines and
00:44 then all the way up across the UP.
00:47 We also have that moderate risk for more numerous severe storms right across I-35 as you're
00:53 looking at the Twin Cities up to Duluth as well.
00:56 That's where storms will be more numerous on this afternoon and evening.
01:00 What are we looking for?
01:01 Well, everything and that's kind of the problem.
01:03 Hail, damaging gusty winds, very heavy rain and tornadoes are not out of the question,
01:08 especially in the area in orange.
01:11 Make sure you are keeping the eyes to the sky and the AccuWeather app on your phone
01:15 and turn those push notifications on.
01:17 That way you get any watches and warnings right to the palm of your hand in your local
01:21 area.
01:22 Now, as we move into Wednesday, the front starts to press a little bit further to the
01:25 east.
01:26 Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Nashville, Memphis, all the way down to Jackson, Mississippi.
01:30 We are looking at some more in the way of spotty severe weather with that some risk
01:34 in yellow.
01:35 Now, you'll notice again we are looking at hail and damaging gusty winds as well as heavy
01:39 rain, but not so much in the way of a tornado threat.
01:42 So if there's any good news, I'd say that's it.
01:44 I wouldn't exactly count them out entirely, but the threat is lower than what we're looking
01:48 at today.
01:49 Now, I love to give a little good news in a forecast, and as we see the front move out
01:53 of the Midwest, it's great news, especially for football fans.
01:59 Football is back in full swing on Thursday.
02:02 Detroit playing Kansas City, Kansas City at home, and it's going to be a stellar night
02:07 for some football.
02:08 We're starting the game with the 80s, and we end the game with temperatures in the fourth
02:12 quarter in the low 70s and AccuWeather real field temperatures, by the way, in the upper
02:16 60s.
02:17 Beautiful night for a little bit of football.
02:19 Now, as we move not just across Kansas City, but up towards Chicago into Indianapolis and
02:24 even out toward areas like Minneapolis, you'll notice temperatures far lower than what we're
02:28 looking at today with cooler, drier air moving in from the north.
02:31 So moral of the story is be aware of severe weather today, but know that better weather
02:36 is ahead this week.
