00:17 And our guest today is a huge part of Tyrese's basketball journey.
00:22 Joining me right now for an all-out conversation is who else?
00:26 But the OG Hallie, Mr. John Halliburton, father of Tyrese Halliburton.
00:32 There he is!
00:35 Welcome to the show, John!
00:39 Thank you. I'm glad to be here.
00:41 Thanks, buddy. We're live on CNN Philippines.
00:43 It's great to have you, John.
00:45 So far, of course, your stay has been amazing.
00:48 I've seen you and your wife, Brenda, by the way, at the lobby of your hotel
00:52 and you were just so friendly. You were going around.
00:55 So tell me, John, what have you been doing, you and your wife?
00:58 And how much are you enjoying the Philippines so far, John?
01:05 So we're really enjoying it.
01:08 And what we've been doing is checking out all these Nike stores to see what you got.
01:15 So it's been a joy.
01:18 How about Filipino food?
01:20 It's great to have you because Tyrese was trying all these other different kinds of Philippine snacks.
01:28 Is there anything in particular that captured your taste buds, John, you and your wife, Brenda,
01:33 that, "Mm, I like this Filipino food"?
01:38 Well, I can't speak for my wife, but I can speak for me.
01:41 Hey, I'm sorry, but I just stay natural.
01:45 I eat food that I know that I'm going to like because I want to be happy when I eat.
01:50 So I don't try too much because when I'm hungry, I want to enjoy my food.
01:56 So I just go to the stores, you know, just natural.
02:00 Yeah. What's your favorite thing about the Philippines so far?
02:06 The people. I love the people because they love their basketball.
02:14 I mean, it is just so fun.
02:18 Like that right there. That crowd is, yeah. Yeah.
02:23 They're all about the game and I love it.
02:27 Well, you were able to watch the games live and experience the energy and the love of the people, the Filipino crowd.
02:34 I want to get your thoughts on.
02:36 And some that goes.
02:39 I want to get your thoughts, John, on the crowd and just enjoying the atmosphere and every time Team USA plays as well.
02:49 See, I think it's like outstanding because, you know,
02:55 the crowd get a chance to see NBA players and they get a chance to see them close up and see what they're all about.
03:04 And realize that these players are humans and they just play the game the right way and they just enjoy it.
03:11 And we just love for the crowd to get into it because they bring that energy, that ready, that Filipino energy.
03:20 Here we go. Let's talk about your son, man.
03:23 Reese Tyrese Halliburton. And as I told you when I met you at the lobby of your hotel last week, said I'm a big fan, huge fan of Tyrese.
03:32 There he is. Maybe you can give me that before you leave. I want that jersey.
03:39 Can I get it? I'll get that jersey. Have Tyrese sign that and then give it to me, John.
03:45 OK, but I want to get it. Hey, you'll see what we can do for you.
03:49 Yes, we will see what I can do for you. Thank you, sir.
03:52 Just have Tyrese sign a jersey and I'm all good, man.
03:57 What are you? I want to get your thoughts since you're the OG, you're his father.
04:00 You basically taught him how to play and you've seen Tyrese right from when he was born, basically.
04:07 And now he's performing at a great level in the World Cup.
04:11 Your thoughts on the performance of Tyrese so far. And are you satisfied with what he has been showing?
04:19 Well, let's go with my thoughts first. Go ahead.
04:22 My thought is that he is he's playing the game the right way.
04:26 Yep. He bring the energy to the team. He moves the ball.
04:31 So overall, with migrating him would be outstanding because he's doing everything right.
04:40 He bring the level of the players up. They enjoying.
04:44 The most important thing is they having fun and he bring that energy.
04:50 And I just love it. Did you? Yeah.
04:53 Yeah. Go ahead. Go ahead. Come to for him to send it. If we come to say he's satisfied.
04:59 Well, you know, I can't get into his mind, so I can't tell you that.
05:02 But I can tell you this right here by me talking to him.
05:06 He's enjoying himself. So stay tuned. It get better.
05:12 I believe that. I believe that for sure. You know, I was heartbroken when Sacramento Sacramento let him go.
05:18 But you told me you were happy because Indiana closer to home and he's been killing it out there.
05:24 And also with Team USA, John, you played sports back then as well.
05:28 How did that help with taking care of a kid that is now basically one of the rising stars in the NBA?
05:36 He was an all star last season. How did that help, John, with you also being a sports minded guy?
05:43 Well, it helped because you understand the game, you get into the game and you realize that this is not a individual sports.
05:53 This is a team sport. And he always been about the team.
06:00 Always. He never been about himself. And if you watch him play, if the world watching play,
06:07 you will see that he tried to get his teammates involved before he get himself involved.
06:14 And then once that happened, you see a totally.
06:21 Fun, outstanding, breathtaking game.
06:27 Well, John Tyrese is playing the same position as a lot of great point guards, Steph Curry, Magic Johnson,
06:34 John Stockton, the big Oscar Robertson, to name a lot of point guards that ever played.
06:41 When all is said and done, where do you see your son will be ranked among the great point guards that ever played in the NBA?
06:49 And also what will be the toughest matchup for Team USA?
06:53 The biggest challenge for them so far so good. All that you will answer after the break.
06:59 John, stay with us because part two of a conversation with the father of Tyrese Halliburton, Mr.
07:05 John Halliburton will continue after the break.
07:08 You're watching Sports S only here on CNN Philippines. We'll be right back.
07:12 Stay tuned. And we're back.
07:17 Thank you for joining us here on Sports S only on CNN Philippines.
07:20 Still with me on a show live by Zoom all the way from his hotel here in Manila.
07:25 John Halliburton, the father of Team USA point guard and Indiana Pacers star Tyrese Halliburton.
07:32 There is Papa Halliburton, his wife, Brenda Tyrese's mother is somewhere in the background.
07:38 Hello to you too, Brenda. OK, let's talk about Tyrese.
07:41 I posed that question earlier, John. Basically, Tyrese is playing the same position as a lot of great point guards that ever played.
07:49 Of course, Steph Curry still playing Magic Johnson,
07:52 arguably one of the best John Stockton, Oscar Robertson,
07:58 Jerry West, Isaiah Thomas. The list will go on and on and on.
08:02 But when all is said and done, I know Tyrese is still a young, young pup.
08:06 He's still a young dog. Tyrese is 23 years old.
08:09 So a long career ahead of him. But where do you see Tyrese ranked among the greatest to ever play the point guard position in the NBA?
08:19 Do you see him top 10, top five?
08:24 You know, I've been waiting to answer this question for you.
08:28 I was just like, come on, ask me, ask me. Because I want to tell you exactly where I see him.
08:35 And the answer to that is very simple. And it goes like this right here.
08:39 I don't know. It's going to be up to God. I like that answer.
08:44 Because his blessing comes from the Lord. So it's going to have to be, it's going to be, it's going to have to be a lot of things.
08:52 He got to stay healthy. He's going to have to still have the love for the game.
08:57 And he got to play the game the right way. And when he do all of those things, we'll see where God put him.
09:03 So I am not going to play God and say he's going to be up here.
09:09 I'm going to say that if he continue to do the things that he's doing and at the end of the day, we'll see how God treat him.
09:20 Well, John, let's play Atlas for this question. What will be the toughest matchup do you see for Team USA this year?
09:27 Grant Hill, when I got to speak to him one on one, he said France is one of the teams, but France is already out.
09:32 What team do you think will post a great threat to Team USA down the line?
09:40 Now, I want to say all of them, but I'm going to give you one that I got my eyes on and that's Canada.
09:49 Canada. When it comes down to Canada, it's going to be very, very, it's we're going to have to play our A game.
09:55 And when we play Germany again, we're going to have to play our A game.
10:00 So that's why, you know, I would like to say that it's going to be like all of them,
10:06 because everybody come and bring the A game to play against the USA.
10:11 So they have to be ready for every game day in and day out.
10:17 But the biggest person that we're going to really have to flex our muscle is going to be Germany and Canada.
10:28 Who did you say? German, Germany, Germany, Canada and Canada.
10:35 Yeah, Germany and Canada. Yeah, Germany.
10:37 Because during the friendly, they were up and then you just came back to beat them.
10:41 And Canada with Shea, Gilgis, Alexander, RJ Barrett, Dylan Brooks, those guys.
10:46 That's going to be a tough, tough matchup. Well, John, I also want to mention we saw a YouTube channel under your name.
10:53 That's yours, right? With mixtapes of Tyrese from his days back in high school.
10:58 Do you remember those videos, those that you posted?
11:01 What was it like? What was it like watching Tyrese grow, grow and seeing him improve as a player?
11:08 As we take a look at some highlights from your YouTube page, John?
11:12 Yeah, I, um, I miss those days and I wish I had the power to bring them back.
11:19 Because, you know, when he's, when he's doing this in front of you, it is just so smooth and so much fun.
11:27 And if you look around, you see the crowd. That's what he was doing.
11:33 They couldn't wait to get in there to see him play. And like I said, once again, it was a great blessing.
11:40 It was just a great blessing. Look at that no look pass.
11:42 I, I've seen a lot of those no look passes in Team USA. His court vision is just uncanny.
11:49 Well, John Tyrese definitely has established himself one of the future faces of the league.
11:56 And there's a reason that that's one of the main reasons why he's part of this team.
12:00 He's the future. He's the up and coming. He was an all star last season.
12:04 He's here in the Philippines in the World Cup. Tyrese is showing that he's one of the best point guards right now.
12:10 This generation. How proud are you and Brett?
12:14 Stop. Stop making me jealous of that jersey, man. Unless you want to send it my way.
12:19 But how proud are you and Brenda? No, go ahead.
12:23 You can show the jersey. But how proud are you and your wife, Brenda of Tyrese?
12:28 Starting from his days and was like when he was still little growing up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
12:37 In Oshkosh North in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, and going to college in Iowa State.
12:42 Being picked by the Kings in the first round 12 overall.
12:45 Being traded to the Pacers now in Team USA playing all around the globe.
12:54 Okay, so let me straighten up one thing and make sure everybody know he is not from Milwaukee.
13:01 We have never lived in Milwaukee. He only played in Milwaukee.
13:07 We are from Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Yep.
13:09 And that's about an hour and 30 minutes from Milwaukee and about 45 minutes to Green Bay.
13:17 So he is from Oshkosh, Wisconsin. He was just born in Milwaukee.
13:20 Make sure we understand that. Yeah.
13:25 Okay. Yeah. And so to speak about watching him play and how proud we are.
13:34 I tell you that it brings tears. It's different.
13:41 You know, it's just the joy of my heart to watch him play.
13:45 It's just something different. And what I really love more than anything is watching others watch him play.
13:55 You know, and enjoy the people watch him play.
13:59 See, for me, that's a blessing for me. And that's my enjoyment.
14:04 And as for his mother, I mean, I wish you guys can meet his mother because his mother is second to none.
14:11 You know what I mean? That's her baby. Oh, yeah.
14:14 You know, and so, you know, she always, always, never, ever miss a game.
14:24 You know what I mean? She's always on top of him and she always makes sure he do it right.
14:29 And he's doing it. You know? Yeah.
14:31 John, really quick.
14:33 Tyrese and his mother is, they're unseparable.
14:37 Yeah. John, we don't have much time, but quickly, 30 seconds or less.
14:41 What do you want to tell all Filipino fans? Go ahead.
14:46 Hey, we just want you to know that from the bottom of our heart, representing the Halliburton family,
14:52 we really appreciate you guys for accepting us, embracing us, and we wouldn't want to be anywhere else but right here.
15:00 So I can say thank you and woohoo!
15:03 Hey, John, send that jersey my way, okay? John, with a signature of your son, okay?
15:08 I'll come collect that, John. Thanks again, buddy. I'll see you, okay?
15:13 My treat. Again, we just spoke to the OG Ali, the father of Tyrese Halliburton.
15:19 That was Mr. John Halliburton, of course, proud father of Tyrese Halliburton of Team USA,
15:25 also with the Indiana Pacers. You owe me that jersey, John. Thank you.
