00:00 Good evening everybody this is Naveen Ganglani reporting to you for Wrappler.com
00:04 this is Mark Aran at the Coliseum in Cubao City where we are about an hour following
00:08 Gila's Philippines absolutely disappointing defeat in the hands of Angola
00:13 to drop their second game in the 2023 FIBA World Cup that they are hosting here in Manila.
00:20 Now the defeat all but basically eliminates Gila's save for a gigantic performance
00:25 in their upcoming game from the next stage of the group phase of the FIBA World Cup.
00:30 It was another disappointing performance because once again the same issues
00:34 that has plagued Gila's for the last few years showed up in shall we say
00:39 disappointing fashion to say the least.
00:42 Jordan Clarkson led the way with 21 points but shot only 7 out of 22 from the field.
00:46 Overall Gila's Philippines hit only 4 of their 22 three-point attempts
00:50 something that head coach Chot Reyes lamented at the end of the contest.
00:54 Kai Soto, Roger Pagoy and also Dwight Ramos each contributed 8 points each
01:00 while AJ Edoo scored 9 points but overall Gila's did not play well.
01:04 They once again allowed 20 offensive rebounds to Angola
01:07 who came in as the lower ranked team in this matchup.
01:10 Additionally Gila's also gave up 15 turnovers that led to many fast break opportunities for Angola
01:16 which allowed the visiting team to run away and build a 16-point lead in the fourth quarter.
01:21 Gila's made it close down the stretch cutting the lead to as low as 5
01:25 before ultimately faltering thanks to an open three-pointer in the corner
01:29 that allowed Angola to seal the game.
01:31 Gila's actually got off to an early lead going up by as much as 9 points
01:34 as Angola struggled to shoot going 4 of 21 in the opening quarter
01:38 but once the field goal shooting of Angola normalized Gila's was in trouble.
01:42 Too much isolation play once again for Jordan Clarkson and the other players
01:46 of the Gila's national team on offense while on defense
01:49 the national team of the Philippines kept switching up schemes trying to find an answer
01:53 only to find Angola finding open shooters again and again to bury them deeper.
01:58 Now after the contest coach Chuck Reyes said that the goal for the Philippines is to win in Italy
02:03 to give them a shot at qualifying in the 2024 Paris Olympics
02:07 which will be more difficult now that Japan won a contest against Finland in their country
02:13 where they are also hosting the FIBA World Cup group phase.
02:17 Can it happen? We shall see.
02:19 Again, Gila's will take on Italy which Chuck Reyes himself called a top 10 team in FIBA
02:26 and would have to blow them out.
02:28 I repeat, blow them out by a huge margin for a chance to advance to the next stage of the group phase.
02:36 But with the way coach Chuck Reyes was talking after the contest
02:38 it seems like the goal for Gila's now is to simply get a win against Italy
02:42 hope Japan loses its next game and that would put the Philippines in good position
02:47 in his opinion to perhaps qualify for Paris.
02:51 Overall, the crowd energy, the atmosphere, disappointment was in the air.
02:55 Fans were leaving the Areneta Coliseum early with minutes to go in the fourth quarter
02:59 whenever Chuck Reyes was shown in the big screen he was booed
03:03 and Angola was playing at their best.
03:06 They were finding open shooters, they were rebounding, they were pushing the pace
03:10 they were celebrating after dunks, they were celebrating after three-point shots
03:14 they were defending well, they were even controlling the physicality of the game
03:18 having Gila scramble all over the place unable to find answers.
03:22 Now, how will Gila's do against Italy, another tough opposition?
03:26 Will we see the team that showed up against Dominican Republic, an encouraging, impressive contest
03:31 or will we see the team that showed up today against Angola, disappointing, looking for answers
03:37 and once again, way too often at this point, looking confused and overmatched.
03:42 For Rappler, this is Navinganglani, we'll catch you all at the next game.
