Transcript
00:00 Q. Okay then Peter, I just started asking you about what inspired you to start up North East Sport then?
00:05 A. Yeah, so in 2008 and 2009, the big recession comes, so I was working in construction money across the country, things were really bad.
00:13 My two boys had started playing football and I was missing them because I was working away from home all the time.
00:19 And previous to that I had a personal tragedy, my first child was still born, Callum, so I really wanted to be there for my kids and watch them grow up.
00:29 So I decided to take the lead and come out of construction and look after my kids.
00:34 Q. How many teams have you got now?
00:36 A. I've got about 16 now at the present time.
00:39 Q. Tell me about the holiday camps you're running here?
00:41 A. Yeah, the holiday camps, they started really about six years ago. It was part of some city council beach camp holiday activities.
00:53 People start beach camps and they're normally massive success, sold out in minutes.
00:59 We'll tell about 900 places in about 12 minutes when they're released and they're hugely popular.
01:03 The kids come down and do rock poling, they play in the beach, sandcastles, sports.
01:09 It's pretty is, we haven't had the nice weather this year but we'll get on with it.
01:14 Q. Do you get a lot of satisfaction from the job in terms of kids remembering what you've done, thanking you, that sort of thing?
01:19 A. Yeah, it's brilliant. I watch them grow up. Some of the kids now I see them in the pubs.
01:24 I've taught them, you know, mine for years and actually sitting there having the pints, which is a bit crazy.
01:29 When I go out and about families always come up and say hello and it's really nice to get respect from the community and I appreciate it.
01:37 [Sounds of the beach]
01:55 Q. Okay then Emily, how much have you enjoyed these summer camps then?
01:57 A. I've enjoyed them so much.
01:59 Q. And how long have you been coming?
02:01 A. I've been around four or five years I think and now I'm a volunteer.
02:08 Q. And why are they so good?
02:10 A. I think they're really good because they get you out of the house and I think it's also amazing that they help people that don't have a lot of money.
02:19 Because this week and the rest of the holidays is a free week so you get to have your dinner in that.
02:27 Q. And what's Peter like as a coach and as an instructor?
02:30 A. Peter's amazing as a coach. I think the work that he's done is phenomenal.
02:34 But there's other coaches too, like there's Lindsay, Morgan, Katerina, Cameron, Leanne.
02:42 There's like loads of coaches that come and help out.
02:46 Q. Having fun despite the weather?
02:48 A. Yeah, it's just the weather.
