00:05 Centre and released in less than two hours.
00:08 The National Commissioner of Correctional Services said Zuma's release was part of
00:12 a remission programme aimed at addressing prison overcrowding.
00:16 As pressure from the opposition mounted on Friday, August 11th, authorities and correctional
00:21 services defended their decision.
00:23 Justice and Correctional Services Minister Ronald Lemola told reporters that the former
00:28 leader immediately benefited from a remission on sentences for non-violent offenders approved
00:34 by the President Cyril Ramaphosa.
00:36 Under the remission process authorised by the President, almost 9,500 inmates will be
00:42 released from prison and placed under correctional supervision.
