00:00The United Nations Security Council held a special session on the situation in the Middle East
00:16following the bombing of three Iranian nuclear facilities by the United States.
00:22And the recent aggression of the United States against Iranian nuclear facilities has sparked
00:30worldwide demonstrations.
00:37And Panamanian police arrested more than 140 people protesting against the privatization
00:44of social security in the province of Bocas del Toro.
00:47Hello and welcome to From the South.
00:55My name is Belen de los Santos.
00:56I'm from Telser Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:58We begin with the news.
01:15We now begin with the information.
01:16The United Nations Security Council held a special meeting on the situation in the Middle East
01:22following the airstrikes carried out by the United States on three Iranian nuclear facilities.
01:28At the Council, China condemned the attacks against Iran and the bombing of nuclear facilities
01:34which violate the UN Charter and undermine the Non-Proliferation Treaty.
01:39They also called for an immediate ceasefire, particularly from Israel.
01:43Russia also condemned the U.S. actions which it described as irresponsible against the sovereign
01:49state of the United Nations, accusing the U.S. of opening Pandora's box, ignoring all the
01:56IAEA warnings about the global repercussions.
02:00For their part, U.K. and French representatives maintained the U.S. and Western lines on the conflict
02:05but also stressed the importance of returning to diplomacy and negotiations.
02:10Meanwhile, U.S. representative continued Trump's threats of new deadly attacks if any Iranian response
02:18on the U.S. targets takes place.
02:20While the representative of the United States continues to make baseless accusations against Iran,
02:34the international community is well aware of the well-documented and dark record of military intervention,
02:42illegal use of force against other sovereign states, and sponsorship of terrorism by the United States
02:49in the Middle East and across the world.
02:52The facts speak for themselves.
02:55And in this context, the U.S. president addressed a change of government in Iran through his social network, Truth Social.
03:13There, Trump stated that it's not politically correct to use the term regime change,
03:18but if the current Iranian regime is unable to make Iran great again, why wouldn't there be a regime change?
03:27This is one of the recent statements of U.S. president on the situation following U.S. strikes.
03:40Meanwhile, on Sunday, Iranian President Masurpa Seskian joined thousands of demonstrators at Tehran's Inglav Square
03:47rallying against crimes committed by the United States and the Israeli occupation against the Iranian people.
03:55The rally in central Tehran aimed to condemn the combined aggressions of the governments of Israel and the United States
04:02after the latter escalated the ongoing conflict by attacking Iranian nuclear facilities.
04:09In these demonstrations and demonstrators, mostly students and faculty members,
04:15were joined by President Masurpa Seskian,
04:17who further denounced the crimes of the U.S. and the Zionist regime on Iranian territories.
04:23In this context, local news agencies reported that participants chanted slogans condemning the aggression
04:28and calling for national unity in defense of sovereignty.
04:33The protest marked growing public support for Iran's armed forces
04:37and stressed the collective outrage over the strikes on vital infrastructure.
04:48Meanwhile, the Iranian parliament voted to close the Strait of Hormuz
04:52following U.S. strikes on three key Iranian nuclear facilities.
04:57The proposal now needs to be greenlit by the government's Supreme National Security Council.
05:03According to experts, the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz in response to the Israeli and U.S. attacks
05:10would be a catastrophe for world markets due to the global dependence on crude oil
05:16coming from this international passage.
05:18Rising oil prices could lead to energy shortages in fuel-dependent regions of the Middle East,
05:24including Asia, Europe, and North America.
05:34Meanwhile, the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of our America,
05:38the People's Trade Treaty, Alba TCP,
05:41issued a statement to strongly condemn the U.S. attack on Iran.
05:45The text begins by saying that the countries of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of our America,
05:50Alba, condemned in the strongest terms the criminal military attack perpetrated by the U.S. government
05:57against peaceful civilian and nuclear facilities in the Islamic Republic of Iran,
06:03particularly the Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan sites.
06:06It also states that this flagrant aggression violates the charter of the United Nations,
06:11international law, and the most elementary principles of peaceful coexistence,
06:16constituting an immameable warfare act that endangers global security and further destabilizes the region.
06:26It violates the international nuclear safety regime and IAEA standards and safeguards.
06:33Moreover, the text indicates that Alba expresses its firm and unwavering solidarity with the Iranian people,
06:41victims once again of the warmongering and interventionist policy of the United States,
06:47which continues to act with impunity disregarding the right to self-determination of peoples and threatening world peace.
06:57The communique ends by highlighting that Alba demands the immediate cessation of these illegal and unilateral actions
07:04and calls upon the international community to express its firm opposition to this unacceptable attack on Iran's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
07:13Alba reaffirms its steadfast commitment to peace, justice, respect for international law and peaceful coexistence among nations
07:20and warns of the serious consequences that this dangerous military escalation could have for global stability.
07:27Meanwhile, in the United States, citizens mobilized across the country in rejection of Trump's actions against Iran.
07:40The demonstrators condemned Washington's direct intervention in the Middle East conflict in support of the Zionist regime of Israel.
07:48In the sense, they denounced that the attacks perpetrated by Trump violate international law,
07:53in addition to supporting a criminal and unjustified war by Israel against the Islamic Republic of Iran.
08:01The protesters also asserted that Trump's actions are part of U.S. policy to create a war in the Middle East.
08:09And in this context, from New York, our correspondent, Henry Camelio, gives us details about the protests that took place on Times Square on Sunday in this U.S. city.
08:27Hello and greetings from New York City, where we had a new day of protests.
08:31These protests happened in Times Square where around 300 people gathered today just raising their voices against a new war
08:40about the incursion of the United States in a new conflict with Iran after they learned that three nuclear plants were bombed.
08:49Today I have one of the protesters who was participating in this march.
08:55Tell me, what was your motivation to join this march?
09:03I'm Iranian-American and it's important and the right thing to do, to stand with people, for people's lives, for people not to be getting bombed.
09:14Children have been bombed by Israel. The first martyr was a little girl. Hospitals have been attacked, a number of hospitals, including a hospital for burnt victims.
09:25So imagine that if you're one of those people, you're already burnt and then you get burnt by a bomb.
09:32So it's important, so it's important for everyone, especially Iranians, even if Iranians are against their governments.
09:40That doesn't mean then for us to support Israel, who has been bombing the Iranian people, backed by the U.S.A.
09:49That's, no!
09:51How about your family? How's your family? I know that you're Iranian. How's your family right now?
09:56My family, as far as I know, last I know, they're safe, God willing. Thank God they are.
10:03What did they tell you about the incursion of the United States? What did they hear? Were they able to see something?
10:13Well, I've heard news that I've talked with my mother, for example, and I also do my own research as well.
10:21I see online, I also see on Iranian TV, but aside from Iranian TV.
10:28So, just in case if I'm going to be accused of being biased, no, I don't just look at Iranian TV.
10:36So, I have seen online that video about a little girl that was martyred by Israel, that a little girl who reminds me of myself, because I'm also Iranian.
10:48What do you think about the policies that this government is implementing in the foreign countries?
10:57The U.S. government, they want everyone under their own control. They want to put back the Pahlavi, the regime, the previous, the king, the Shah.
11:10They want to put his son, the crown prince, they want to put him back in Iran.
11:15But the Iranian people got rid of his family, his father, for a reason.
11:21So, the Iranian people don't really support his legacy.
11:26That even with, that the majority of Iranian people, that even with Iranians who are against the government, that doesn't mean that they support Reza Pahlavi.
11:35That there are Iranians who, I was seeing in the protests today, that who don't wear hijab, that I've seen in protests in general, that Iranians who don't wear hijab and they're supporting Iran against Israel.
11:50That they may want, even if they want government change, that doesn't mean they want Reza Pahlavi, that they want backed by the U.S.
11:58That doesn't mean they support Israel, no.
12:01Thank you very much.
12:03Well, these kind of protests are going to happen in the upcoming weeks.
12:10And this, specifically, won't happen in a really peaceful way.
12:15I'm Henry Camelo, reporting from New York City.
12:18Back to you.
12:20Now we have a short break coming up.
12:23But first, remember you can join us on TikTok at Tell Us Your English, where you will find news in different formats, news updates and much more.

12:38Let's get back.
12:40We're back somewhere.
12:41We're out of the mood.
12:42We're back.
12:43And we're back.
12:44We meet again.
12:45We're back.
12:46We're behind.
12:48We're back.
12:49We're back.
12:50We're back.
12:51We're back.
12:52We're back the other side.
12:53We're back.
12:54We're back.
12:55Welcome back to From the South.
13:10We continue with more information.
13:12In this case, we go to the Middle East, to Palestine, as in the last 24 hours,
13:18Israeli occupation forces killed 51 civilians in Gaza and injured 100 more.
13:24The Palestinian Health Ministry registers nearly 56,000 people killed
13:30since the onset of the Israeli genocide in the Gaza Strip, most of them women and children.
13:36Authorities added that 131,242 people have been injured since October of 2023 as well.
13:45The real death toll is known to be much higher,
13:48as the Zionist regime prevents ambulances and civil defense teams from searching for the victims,
13:55so thousands remain under the rubble still.
14:03And overnight on Saturday, the Gaza Strip was the scene of more violence with the Israeli airstrike
14:10that claimed the lives of at least five Palestinians in the Al-Tifa neighborhood east of the city of Gaza.
14:18Local media confirmed that the impact occurred in a residential area,
14:22adding this event to the growing list of attacks in the region,
14:26deepening concern for the security of the civilian population in Gaza.
14:31And after 10 weeks of blockade of humanitarian aid to Palestine and several killings on the roads,
14:43heading to the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation centers,
14:46the situation is harsh and famine talks the Palestinian population.
14:50Let's see more.
14:55Daily gunfire by Israeli troops toward crowds on the roads heading to the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation centers
15:01has killed several hundred people and wounded hundreds more in past weeks,
15:04according to Gaza's health ministry.
15:06Israel seeks to have the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation replace the un-run aid network in Gaza.
15:11One runs after his own sustenance and the sustenance of his children.
15:22I left with nothing at home but a plate of rice, and we went out to death.
15:26In truth, it's a good thing for us because one doesn't have anything to buy from what's available
15:30due to the prices, in the United States no prices like this.
15:33Thousands of people must walk miles to reach the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation centers,
15:45three of which are in the far south outside the city of Rafah.
15:49Palestinians said the danger begins when the crowds enter the Israeli military zone encompassing Rafah.
15:54Those who managed to survive the Zionist massacres and reach the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation centers
15:59face a harsh reality, total food shortages.
16:03You enter the streets to arrive before the people, to the point of death as I call it,
16:13I call it the point of death, the tank is in front of us.
16:17The machine gun is in front of us and the quadcopter is above us,
16:21and there are soldiers on the ground with snippers, anyone who moves before the time is shot,
16:25and the moment the tank retreats.
16:27We start running, a long distance, about 600 meters, we run it from the place where we are to bring aid.
16:33Israel claims that it has only fired warning shots at suspects approaching its forces on the roads
16:45leading to the humanitarian foundation's food centers in Gaza.
16:48However, prior to the incidents of the past few days where Israel has intensified its killings,
16:53the Gaza Strip Ministry of Health claimed that at least 300 people had been killed,
16:57and more than 2,600 injured near-aid distribution points since the GAF began operations in Gaza on May 26th.
17:11Following his weekly Angelus prayer in the Vatican on Sunday,
17:15Pope Leo XIV called on the world not to forget the humanitarian crisis in Gaza
17:20as conflict in the Middle East escalated with overnight U.S. strikes on Iran.
17:25Alarming news from the Middle East, especially from Iran, are coming one after the other.
17:39In this dramatic scenario that includes Israel and Palestine,
17:43the daily suffering of the population risks falling into oblivion,
17:48especially in Gaza and the other territories,
17:52where the urgency for adequate humanitarian support becomes more and more pressing.
18:00Meanwhile, hundreds of South Africans mobilized in the city of Soweto
18:04to express their rejection of the genocidal aggression
18:08that the Israeli army is executing against the Gaza Strip.
18:12On Sunday, citizens walked along the main avenues of the city with banners and slogans
18:18showing their support for the Palestinian cause.
18:32The United Nations warned that an escalation of the conflict in Sudan
18:36would have deadly consequences for civilians caught in the crossfire.
18:41In a recent update of the emergency situation in the northeastern African nation,
18:47the independent international fact-finding mission for Sudan
18:50described the situation as a humanitarian crisis,
18:54highlighting the increased use of heavy weaponry in populated areas.
18:58According to United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees experts,
19:03there is widespread sexual violence, starving children and blocked humanitarian aid,
19:09which has led to a severe humanitarian crisis, large-scale displacement
19:14and a growing number of people in need.
19:17Despite the UN arms embargo imposed on Sudan,
19:20the mission has collected testimonies and stressed that the conflict continues.

20:08Welcome back to From the South.
20:10We continue with more information.
20:12The government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo
20:14extended a ban on cobalt exports for another three months.
20:19The Department for Regulation and Control of the Market of Strategic Minimal Substances
20:24informed that a decision was made to extend the temporary suspension
20:28due to the high levels of stocks in the market.
20:32The authority assesses the assignment of cobalt export quotas among mining companies.
20:37However, the country is the world's largest supplier of cobalt,
20:41so it announced the export ban after prices reached a nine-year low.
20:47Meanwhile, in China, disaster management and strategic reserves authorities
21:09announced on Saturday that a batch of emergency supplies
21:13was sent to the flood-stricken central province of Unan.
21:16These supplies comprise 81,500 items, including tents, folding beds, quilts and mattresses
21:24and will help effectively relocate affected residents and ensure their basic living needs.
21:31Recently, that province has been hit by severe flooding
21:34with the city of Shanghizeh and the Xiangxi, Tuxia and Miao ethnic autonomous prefectures
21:41being the hardest-hit areas.
21:43China has a four-level emergency response system for flood control,
21:48with level one being the most severe.
21:51And in Ecuador, the Geophysical Institute registered a 5.5 earthquake in the southwestern province of Guayas.
22:04The quake occurred at 2 p.m. local time with an epicenter 17 kilometers from Naranjal
22:10and a depth of 40 kilometers.
22:12Authorities added that the quake was also felt in the Ecuadorian capital, Quito.
22:17So far, no victims or material damage has been reported,
22:20but monitoring continues for possible aftershocks.
22:24It should be noted that the country is located in the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire,
22:29a ring of geological faults that surrounds the ocean
22:33and in which 85 percent of the world's seismic activity takes place.
22:43In other news, Panamanian police arrested more than 140 people
22:48protesting against the privatization of social security in the province of Bocas del Toro.
22:54As part of the government's Omega operation,
22:57security forces detained people protesting on Saturday
22:59after the announcement of a measure that contemplates the suspension of constitutional guarantees.
23:06The action includes limitation to the freedom of transit,
23:09assembly expression and protection against arbitrary detentions.
23:14The decision by the Molino administration
23:16follows more than a month of protests and street closures
23:19in rejection of the reform of the social security system.
23:24And like this, we have come to the end of this news brief.
