00:00 A new study is linking a popular acid reflux drug to a higher risk of dementia later in
00:04 life.
00:05 The research examined people prescribed proton pump inhibitors for frequent acid reflux,
00:11 stomach ulcers or other digestive tract issues.
00:14 Those who took the drugs for more than 4.4 years had a 33 percent greater likelihood
00:19 of developing dementia compared to those who did not take the medication.
00:23 The research was published in the medical journal Neurology.
00:26 The study is the latest to link these medications to a long list of conditions like stroke,
00:31 heart disease and kidney disease.
00:33 Experts say this new research does not prove these medications cause dementia.
00:37 They said it provides evidence that sustained use of these medications could pose a risk
00:42 for dementia.
00:44 Dementia affects about one in three adults ages 85 and older.
