00:00 The metaverse.
00:00 The metaverse.
00:01 The metaverse.
00:02 Let's talk about metaverse.
00:03 By now, you've probably heard of the metaverse.
00:07 From now on, we're going to be metaverse first,
00:09 not Facebook first.
00:11 But even with all this hype.
00:13 And many are betting big
00:14 that it could change the face of how we interact.
00:17 We have to say it's pretty amazing.
00:19 The metaverse might still be a little confusing.
00:22 What is the metaverse?
00:24 The metaverse is basically the successor state
00:28 to today's mobile internet.
00:30 It's an internet that is going to be a lot more immersive,
00:33 more social possibly, a lot more engaging, more 3D.
00:37 So it's almost like the internet's going to be
00:38 all around us in some ways,
00:40 breaking away from our phones, our desks.
00:42 The metaverse is going to offer,
00:44 at least in the way that we define it,
00:46 let's say it's going to be web 3.0.
00:48 It's going to be a world that's going to be more seamless.
00:51 It's going to give more opportunity
00:52 for much better experiences,
00:54 much more immersive experiences.
00:56 And to get there,
00:57 there are a lot of different technologies involved.
01:00 You know, it is enabled by many different technologies.
01:02 So AI, obviously, which is really hot right now,
01:04 is part of the future state of the internet.
01:06 AR and VR, 5G, 6G, cloud computing, edge computing.
01:11 There's an element of blockchain as well, possibly.
01:13 So yeah, it's kind of how we will experience
01:15 the future state of the internet.
01:16 So that to me is part of that beginning idea and concept
01:19 of how do we make the world more immersive?
01:22 I am proud to announce that starting today,
01:25 our company is now meta.
01:28 Mark Zuckerberg made this announcement in late 2021,
01:31 saying that his company is now going to be Metaverse first,
01:35 not Facebook first.
01:36 And other major brands and companies
01:38 proceeded to join the metaverse party.
01:40 Fashion brands like Nike and Gucci
01:43 created virtual experiences for customers to explore
01:46 their history, products, and designs.
01:49 Walmart built a virtual world called Walmartland,
01:53 where people can play games, attend concerts,
01:56 and buy virtual merchandise for its avatars.
01:59 But some people argue that the metaverse
02:01 still has a long way to go.
02:03 You know, as much as I don't necessarily
02:04 always like seeing those headlines
02:06 that proclaim the death of the metaverse,
02:07 I understand that it was overhyped.
02:09 There was just a lot.
02:11 I think it's important to kind of understand
02:12 that especially for the younger generations,
02:15 for Gen Z, but more so Gen Alpha,
02:17 whatever happens in these virtual spaces
02:18 is still very real, right?
02:20 Just because it happens in Fortnite
02:22 doesn't make it less real to them.
02:24 It's very real.
02:25 It's this continuum of the spaces they inhabit,
02:27 which can be virtual and the physical world.
02:29 The friends, the relationships they make are real.
02:31 For a lot of us that are in this industry,
02:33 it's also making sure that we explain to people,
02:35 like, this is a long-term vision.
02:37 It's a long-term play.
02:39 We do have one more thing.
02:44 And there are some notable companies
02:46 making long-term plays on the metaverse.
02:49 Apple unveiled in June 2023 its long-awaited...
02:53 Vision Pro.
02:54 ...a mixed-reality headset
02:55 scheduled to be released in early 2024.
02:58 Tech website The Verge demoed it and called it...
03:01 The best possible version of a VR headset.
03:04 Also in 2023, BMW opened what it calls
03:08 the world's first virtual factory,
03:10 a digital twin of a factory that it can run simulations on
03:14 before actually opening the real physical factory.
03:17 BMW did this using NVIDIA's Omniverse platform,
03:21 which its CEO has compared to the metaverse.
03:24 Epic Games, the developers of the hugely popular
03:27 Fortnite game, is also deeply invested in the metaverse
03:31 after raising $2 billion to...
03:33 Advance the company's vision to build the metaverse.
03:37 The LEGO Group, which announced a metaverse partnership
03:39 with Epic Games, is also bullish on the metaverse space.
03:43 Firstly, I don't think that metaverse
03:45 is gonna be just one platform.
03:46 I think metaverse, at least in my view,
03:48 should be platform-agnostic.
03:50 I think that's the benefit of it,
03:51 is the fact that it's going to actually be agnostic
03:54 to a particular platform.
03:55 It's going to exist in different technologies,
03:57 and it should be interoperable.
03:59 And I think what's gonna power it up
04:00 is if people are able to move seamlessly
04:02 through the experiences in the metaverse
04:04 versus actually being siloed into one particular platform.
04:08 So whether it's on Roblox, Fortnite, NVIDIA's Omniverse,
04:12 and through a meta or Apple headset
04:14 or something else entirely,
04:15 there are a lot of different directions
04:17 the metaverse could go.
04:19 And that's the point, as technology, the internet,
04:21 and the way we use both of them evolves.
04:24 This is not gonna go away.
04:25 The internet will continue to evolve.
04:27 Their hardware is gonna continue to evolve
04:30 beyond our phones, you know,
04:31 what about that pro-smartphone future?
04:33 New wearables are gonna potentially open up
04:36 new ways of us to engage with the internet.
04:38 Those are all things that brands look at
04:40 towards the horizon.
04:41 So yeah, the long-term value is that
04:43 things are moving fast,
04:45 technology is converging,
04:46 and a whole new generation that is gonna change things
04:49 is slowly, you know, growing up.
