00:00 Kids can get themselves into a lot of sticky situations, but experts say some of their
00:04 activities are inherently more dangerous than others.
00:07 Dr. Dan Park tells HuffPost, "There are many obvious culprits of childhood injuries,
00:11 namely things that involve high places or high speeds."
00:14 Park points to things like the monkey bars and trampolines as the biggest threats, explaining,
00:18 quote, "Being thrown very high into the air at very high speeds, and often at awkward
00:22 angles, can lead to musculoskeletal injuries, like fractures to the elbows and legs."
00:28 With Dr. Christopher Kelly adding that a common injury with regards to monkey bars are "supercondylar
00:32 fractures to the elbow," which need surgery and orthopedic pinning.
00:36 However, a less obvious cause of injury is hot surfaces.
00:39 Burns related to the sun heating metal surfaces that are meant to be played on can be serious,
00:43 especially if children are barefoot.
00:45 So what's the most dangerous thing for kids?
00:47 Well, anything that involves pools.
00:49 According to the CDC, backyard swimming pools, even shallow ones, can be killers.
00:54 They say pools are the leading cause of death in kids aged 1 to 4, and the second for those
00:59 aged 5 to 14.
01:00 With the CDC reporting, on average, 4,012 drownings have occurred each year from 2011
01:06 to 2020.
