00:00 [SIRENS]
00:24 This morning at 7.23 AM, a witness
00:28 called police to report a man with a gun shooting
00:31 in central Auckland at a building on Lower Queen Street.
00:35 At 7.34 AM, police arrived on the scene,
00:39 and the armed defenders squad arrived there four minutes
00:41 later.
00:42 It's with deep sorrow that I can confirm that two people have
00:45 been killed.
00:47 At this stage, I'm aware that six others have been injured,
00:50 including police.
00:52 They've been taken to Auckland Hospital.
00:55 Police have also confirmed that the shooter is also dead.
01:01 The assessment from officials is that there
01:02 is no national security risk.
01:05 There is no change to New Zealand's national security
01:08 threat level.
01:09 The offender was armed with a pump action shotgun.
01:13 He moved through the building site,
01:15 discharging the firearm as he went.
01:19 Upon reaching the upper levels of the building,
01:22 the man contained himself in an elevator,
01:25 shots were fired, and he was located a short time later.
01:29 We have been in regular contact with FIFA.
01:32 They are proceeding as planned.
01:35 There'll be an increased police presence, obviously,
01:37 around Auckland to provide public reassurance.
01:40 But the police have indicated that they
01:42 don't think there is an ongoing security or safety risk.
