Three dead including gunman after shooting in Auckland

With all eyes on the opening of the World Cup New Zealand has been rocked by a deadly shooting in Auckland. A 24-year-old gunman opened fire at a city construction site killing two people and injuring six more including a police officer. New Zealand’s Prime Minister has praised the first responders.

00:17 I saw construction workers running outside, you could see the look on their faces, they were scared, they were concerned.
00:22 At around 8am, our armed offenders squad, supported by special tactics group,
00:27 located the offender inside a lift shaft where he had barricaded himself
00:33 and attempted to engage him, having secured the floors above and below.
00:39 The offender fired at police, injuring an officer.
00:43 Shots were exchanged and the offender was later found deceased.
00:47 Three people, including the gunman, were killed in the shooting.
00:51 Six other people, including police officers, were also injured.
00:55 We heard gunshots, probably a whole round that got let off.
00:59 Wasn't sure if it was coming from the police or the shooter at the time.
01:02 And then about two minutes later, a police officer came out and he had blood down his shirt.
01:07 Authorities say the gunman was carrying a pump-action shotgun and moved through the building, shooting as he went.
01:13 When he reached the upper levels, he went into a lift shaft where police tried to engage with him.
01:19 Further shots were fired by the man and police say he was found dead a short time later.

01:28 There is nothing to suggest that he has presented a higher level risk than was indicated by that history.
