00:00 Abiogen Pharma, a leading biopharmaceutical company in the bone area and bone metabolism,
00:13 announces the acquisition of 97.09% of the Swiss Efrex Pharmaceuticals, present in several European and extra-European markets,
00:22 which develops and sells drugs with specialist indications, in particular for rare skeletal muscle pathologies.
00:29 The main molecule of Efrex, the effervescent sodium alendronate, belonging to the class of biphosphonates,
00:35 a group of non-hormonal drugs, has been distributed by Abiogen in Italy since 2014.
00:40 But what does this acquisition mean for Abiogen Pharma?
00:43 We asked the president and CEO of Abiogen Pharma, Massimo Di Martino.
00:48 We decided to acquire Efrex because it has an extremely important asset,
00:54 which is this formulation of a molecule that is part of the bisphosphonate family.
01:01 This research was born in the research center of the company from which Abiogen was born, the Gentili Institute,
01:08 and consequently allows us to continue to develop all the research and development activities
01:15 on this family of molecules that deal with the area of osteoarticular metabolism
01:22 and, consequently, for those patients who suffer from pathologies such as osteoporosis, neuroalgodystrophy,
01:30 Paget, or even osteolysis of the brain, and so on.
01:34 This acquisition means having the possibility of being able to interact in a synergistic way,
01:42 especially for the entire prospective development,
01:47 putting together our international networking, our partnerships with that of Efrex,
01:54 and consequently trying to speed up development, growth,
02:00 and go and receive those unexpressed potentials that still represent these assets.
02:05 And what is the strategic value of this operation in terms of internationalization of Abiogen?
02:11 This is the question that Martino asks at the head of the International Business Unit of this,
02:17 which is among the first 15 Italian pharmaceutical companies,
02:21 with a turnover of 188 million euros in 2022 and 439 employees.
02:26 The strategic value is extremely high,
02:29 this is because the flagship product of Efrex is the second product for us in terms of turnover,
02:36 within what is the musculoskeletal area of osteoarticular metabolism.
02:40 This allows us on the one hand to put the asset in safety,
02:43 because it allows us to have the availability of the product for Italy for the next few years.
02:49 At the same time, it allows us to have an international portfolio of products available,
02:55 which represents the correct and complete framework for osteoporosis therapy.
02:59 This is alien andronate, which we have already mentioned, vitamin D and calcium.
03:05 The goal is to take advantage of the experience and skills that we have developed in Italy in recent years
03:12 and to be able to replicate it also in the international field.
03:16 This is not only with a direct presence in Switzerland, in this case thanks to the acquisition of Efrex,
03:22 but also in Germany, where we made a first acquisition last year,
03:27 and also with all our current partners.
