AT&T ($T@US) is focusing on expanding its network of fiber-optic cables to provide faster internet speeds to more customers, even in areas where it currently doesn't offer broadband services. This move sets AT&T apart from its competitors, Verizon ($VZ@US) and T-Mobile US ($TMUS@US), who rely on technology that beams broadband from cellular towers. The company plans to cover over 30 million homes and businesses within its existing service area with fiber by the end of 2025, replacing older copper wirelines in many cases. AT&T acknowledges the high cost of this expansion and is seeking external investment and government funding to accelerate the build-out. The company spent $24 billion on its fiber and 5G networks last year and expects a similar level of spending this year.
