Near the village of Avukana located in the Anuradhapura district stands the tallest Buddha statue in Sri Lanka.The Avukana Buddha statue is almost 48 ft high and is carved out from a granite cliff. It is almost free standing being joined to the cliff by just a narrow piece of rock. It is commonly believed that this statue was constructed sometimes in the 05th century. During the region of king Dhathusena although caved more than a thousand years ago. The Avukana Buddha statue is in extremely good condition with its feature and details is still very sharp and clear. Despite its size, it was very delicately curved; resulting in an image of finesse and grass to give a sense of the statue’s size, a person of the average height would stand as tall as its toes. It is so well crafted that rain drops will flow down vertically and land right between the feet of the statue.
It is reported that the Bharana the person who has been accepted the construction of the Kala Wewa, and about seven20,000 people were given a daily basis during 07 years to complete this unique creation.
It is said that the juice of the leaves and shale have used to melt the stone and Bharana the stone craftsman has worked one and half hours daily during whole 07 years to build this statue.The waves of the robe has been created according to the waves of Kala Wewa.
