This guy built a gorgeous console table with a welded steel base. He began by joining three wooden planks using glue, creating a solid tabletop, and polishing it. Next, he trimmed some steel beams at an angle, sanded them, and welded them to a flat steel plate. Once the base was ready, he spray-painted it brown, attached it to the tabletop using screws, and finished his DIY project.

00:00I'm making a console table.
00:04The tabletop will be alder and the base is welded steel.
00:15I started by cutting these boards to a rough length and then filled in a couple of knots
00:30and some checks that were in these boards.
01:15Here's a couple of idiots in my shop trying to choose the order to put these boards in
01:39for glue-up.
02:09To get a little extra thickness on the tabletop, I'm making two panels.
02:38One in eight-quarter and one in four-quarter.
07:08I added a piece of plywood to the table saw fence and raised it up a little bit.
07:14This allowed me to reference the eight-quarter panel against that fence and cut the other
07:20side flush.
07:45I wanted to cut a bevel on the bottom side of this table, so I cut it so that the bevel
07:50started right where the seam was between the two panels, hopefully hiding that seam.
10:06Richard, over at 42Fab here in Oklahoma City, cut out these plates for me on his plasma
10:35CNC.
11:00Now there may have been a better way for me to do this, but this is what I came up with.
11:03I needed to weld these legs onto this lower plate from underneath.
11:10I didn't want to have any welds showing on top.
11:13So I needed a jig to hold them at 90 degrees to the base, and this is what I came up with.
11:19A little clunky, but it seemed to work okay.
13:40So this second panel serves a couple of purposes.
13:52It adds some weight to the base of this table to help keep it more stable.
13:58And I also wanted the top plate that you see when you're looking at the table to be raised
14:03up off the floor to have a small reveal underneath it.
14:07So this second plate is cut an inch smaller in both directions, and now is plug welded
14:15to the bottom of the top plate.
15:01So that's it.
15:24I really like how this table turned out.
15:25I struggled with the color for the base for a little while.
15:29Settled on a dark brown, and I think it looks really nice.
15:33Please subscribe if you care to, and we'll see you on the next one.
15:36Thanks.
