हैलोवीन पश्चिमी देशों में धूमधाम से मनाया जाने वाला त्यौहार है. इस त्यौहार के लिए सभी अपने-अपने अंदाज़ में तैयारियां करते हैं. बच्चों के लिए ये पड़ौसी और रिश्तेदारों से चॉकलेट्स लेने का दिन है, वहीं बड़े इस दिन अपने पूर्वजों की आत्मा की शांति की प्रार्थना करते हैं. आमतौर पर लोग त्यौहार पर खूबसूरत कपड़ों में सजते हैं लेकिन ये त्यौहार कुछ अलग है. इस दिन लोग चला कर डरावना रूप बनाते हैं. आत्माओं और भूतों की तरह मेकअप किया जाता है. कपड़े भी इसी थीम के अनुसार चुने जाते हैं. यूरोप में सैल्टिक जाति के लोग मानते थे कि इस समय मृत लोगों की आत्माएं आकर संसारिक प्राणियों से साक्षात्कार करती हैं. वे सोचते थे कि उनके पुरखों की आत्मा धरती पर आएगी ,जिससे उनका फसल काटना आसान हो जाएगा. इसीलिए वे चुड़ेलें बनते और जानवरों के मौखटे, उनकी चमड़ी, उनके सिर पहनकर अलाव के आसपास नाचते -गाते थे. वे मानते थे कि कोई विशिष्ट सर्वोच्च प्राकृतिक शक्ति है. इसे ‘All Saints-Day’-All Hallows (holy) या Hallows Eve मानते थे , जो धीरे- धीरे Halloween बन गया. अमेरिका मे तो इसे कद्दू की खेती की कटाई के साथ भी जोड़ा जाता है. इस समय कद्दू बहुतायत में व बड़े- बड़े मिलते हैं, जिन्हें आसानी से काटा भी जा सकता है. सामने की तरफ इस पर डरावने तरीके से मुंह काटकर, बीच में जलती हुई मोमबत्ती रख देते हैं. जिन्हें पुरानी सदी की याद में रात को अँधेरे में घर की चौखट पर रखते हैं. इसे Jack-O-lanterns कहते हैं.
Halloween is a festival celebrated with pomp in western countries. Everyone prepares for this festival in their own way. For children, it is a day to take chocolates from neighbors and relatives, while elders pray for the peace of their ancestors' souls on this day. Usually people dress up in beautiful clothes on the festival but this festival is something different. On this day people make a scary look by running. Makeup is done like spirits and ghosts. The clothes are also selected according to this theme. Europe, the people of the Celtic race believed that at this time the souls of the dead come and interview the worldly beings. They used to think that the souls of their ancestors would come to earth, which would make it easier for them to harvest. That is why they used to become witches and dance around the bonfire wearing animal masks, their skin, their heads. They believed that there was a specific supreme natural force. It was considered 'All Saints-Day'-All Hallows (holy) or Hallows Eve, which gradually became Halloween.
