‘I would have been killed’: The plight of Afghanistan’s female artists

Today on Encore, we speak to a female artist who escaped from Afghanistan and is now in Paris. Rada Akbar fled Kabul as Afghanistan fell to the Taliban. She talks to Eve Jackson about the reasons she was forced to leave, why her striking self-portraits pose such a threat to the Taliban and her fears for the people left behind.
We also find out how one of Afghanistan's most prominent filmmakers Sahraa Karimi fled with her family to Ukraine. Despite the Taliban's leadership striving to portray a softer image than when they last ruled Afghanistan between 1996 and 2001, she warns of a "genocide of filmmakers and artists" if the international community fails to act.
