Part 1 of 2, Randy Rawlings (Cathy Lee Crosby) is a 2 time Olympic medalist in running. Accomplished, but unfulfilled with teaching exercise classes, she applies for a new position as the boys' basketball coach at the high school. The former coach having been fired, Randy is sent a telegram that is nothing less than a BINDING CONTRACT, a promissory document. To the chagrin of sexist administrator Fenton Granger, who assumed Randy was a man (always do interviews first, kids!), Randy is a unisex name! And she wastes no time reminding Granger that she is protected against discrimination. In spite of a rocky start with this rowdy group of boys, Randy is cool and undaunted, and soon wins them over, impressing them with her knowledge of basketball.
