Summary video of the ALDE Hearing on "Medically assisted dying and euthanasia - a matter for human rights"
Event date: 05/07/07 09:00 to 18:30
Location: Room ASP 3G3, European Parliament, Brussels
The hearing is aimed at discussing and analysing laws, policies and practices across Europe - as well as abroad - towards individuals suffering unendurably with no hope of relief and who seek assistance to die in dignity.
The recent cases of Piero Welby, Diane Pretty, Vincent Humbert along with many others, have raised public attention on requests by individuals to have their wills to die in dignity respected, as well as the dramatic situations of their families. Surveys among practitioners reveal that assisted dying is a widespread practice in hospitals, taking place clandestinely.
Debates are emerging in Member States on this issue, while the issue was also debated in the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly. Opinion polls across Europe show that there is growing support for a regulation of this phenomena, yet politicians are often afraid to raise the subject.
For all these reasons it is important to shed a light on current practices and policies in Member States as well as in other States so to analyse different options, their pros and cons.
The event (organised by ALDE, the Luca Coscioni Association and the Transnational Radical Party, with the support of the UK LibDems and of other parties and with the help of the World Federation of Right to Die Societies) will launch a Declaration and a Network of Legislators that support the full implementation of the right to refuse compulsory treatments and of the right to die in dignity, through Medically Assisted Suicide and strictly regulated euthanasia.
