Neanderthal 'Minibrains' Grown In A Petri Dish Scientists from UC San Diego presented the work at a conference for the university. Using stem cells created with Neanderthal genes, the team grew them into “minibrains.”
The “minibrains” look like pea shaped organs resembling the cortex, or outer layer of the brain.
Alysson Muotri, Geneticist at UC, San Diego Researchers have long been looking for clues about Neanderthals. Merging ancient DNA, the genome editor CRISPR, and "organoids" built from stem cells, the team may be able to begin to understand Neanderthal brain cognition.
