The U.S. State Department, the CIA and the British government, played a strong role in influencing political control in Guyana during its road to independence, in part because the U.S. wanted to avoid another Cuba in its hemisphere. The strategic promotion of an ethnic divide was used to fulfill imperialist economic interests.
