The NBA Most Valuable Player race heats up and Kansas takes care of business in the NCAA basketball championship on this edition of getthedaily.com Welcome to Get-the-Daily-dot-com. I'm Dana Ward here with your sports news update. The Kansas Jayhawks won their third NCAA Basketball Championship after defeating the Memphis Tigers 75-68 on Monday. The game was close from the start but with just under two minutes Memphis began to pull away. Kansas battled back and relied on a strategy of fouling as Memphis struggled with free throws throughout the season, making just over half of them. The strategy paid off and with a few seconds left in the game, Kansas was only down by 3. Kansas star Mario Chalmers shot a heavily contested three pointer with 2 seconds left. It somehow went in to and tied the game. Kansas used their momentum to take over the extra period and secure the win. The loss was only the second one this season for Memphis, which won an NCAA-record 38 games this season. The Detroit Tigers have still not won a game this season and are 0-7. The team, which has the league's second- highest payroll at $138 million, was favored by many to win their division and get to the World Series. The Tigers were dealt their latest loss by the Boston Red Sox, who won the game 5-0. So far this season, the Tigers have been outscored 44-15. Their struggles on the offense are especially vexing as the Tigers spent tens of millions of dollars acquiring Edgar Renteria and Miguel Cabrera. The team has also been hampered by injuries to key players as can be seen on their 15 day DL which includes Curtis Granderson and Fernando Rodney. Starting pitcher Justin Verlander summed up the team's feelings by saying "It's definitely embarrassing." He went to say that they were playing too "casual" and were wrong to think that things will come around on their own.
