Hurricane Nicole brings floods and power cuts to Bermuda

The latest seasonal storm to strike the Caribbean, Hurricane Nicole, has been battering Bermuda.

People did their best to secure their homes, while schools and businesses closed, as winds approaching 200 kilometres an hour lashed the island.

The eye of the Category 3 storm has since moved away from the British territory towards the northeast, while
continuing to bring storm surge flooding to the island, according to the National Hurricane Centre.

The authorities urged Bermuda’s 65,000 people to stay inside as the hurricane passed – a recommendation that was largely followed.

But trees were uprooted and roofs ripped off, homes were flooded, and thousands of households suffered power cuts.
High winds even destroyed the weather centre’s radar.

Forecasters say the storm is expected to weaken over the next couple of days.
