On Tuesday afternoon, an accident on Interstate 5 in Orland, California claimed the life of a teenager.

The crash was reportedly caused by a California Highway Patrol (CHP) officer whose name has not been made public.

CHP Sgt. Tony Odell spoke with area station KCRA-TV and revealed distracted driving may have been the cause of the crash.

Said Sgt. Odell, “(The officer's) attention was diverted away from the road, looking down at, I believe, his computer. When he looked up, traffic was slowing and coming to a stop. (He) applied his brakes and rear-ended the vehicle that was in front of him..."

The victim has been identified as 15-year-old Willow resident Weston Sites.

He was riding in the back seat of the 2013 Hyundai when the collision occurred.

The driver and the passenger seated in the front sustained only minor injuries.
