Terrifying moment passengers panic as woman screams in horror during packed sky ride

It's one of the most famous landmarks in New York but a bumpy ride on the city's aerial tramway sparked terror as this footage showsPsychologists say the flight or fight response is a physiological reaction that occurs when a person perceives a harmful event, attack, or threat to survival.

And there's no better example of it than this footage which shows the moment one woman's response to fear sparks a chain reaction - in mid air.

Commuters travelling on the New York aerial tramway - which takes people 3,100 feet across the east river to Roosevelt Island from Manhattan in three minutes - got more than they bargained for after the cabin hit a rocky patch.

And if this woman's screams are anything to go buy you'd think the tram , which travels at 18 miles an hour, was about to plummet from the sky.As the woman reacts, more and more people also react and before you know the entire journey turns into an ear-splitting drama.

After a few seconds the travellers calm down when they realise it was a run of the mill situation but the woman who sparked the incident can be heard sobbing.Most trips on the Roosevelt Island tramway go off without incident.

Each cabin has a capacity of up to 110 people and they make 115 journeys across the river each day.

The aerial tramway broke down in 2006 sparking a major refurbishment.

It has been made famous in numerous TV shows and films including CSI and the the 1994 film Léon starring Jean Reno and Natalie Portman.
