Irma Vila ~ Cielito Lindo

Mexican Mondays returns. Irma Vila, born Amida Rojo Gamboa in the state of Sinaloa, Mexico in 1916, was primarily a Mexican singer. In the 1930s-40s, she was one of the first performers of the new Ranchera style which originated in Northern Mexico. Irma became famous for her distinctive soft falsetto voice. Besides performing a busy schedule in Mexico, she toured France, North Africa, and had multiple tours in Spain. Irma was not an actress but after her first successful tour of North Africa and Europe, she was given the starring role in Canta y no Llores (Sing and do not Cry) to showcase her singing talent to millions in Latin America and Spain who otherwise would not be able to see her perform. Irma performed eight songs in the movie and Cielito Lindo was the grand finale. The successful Canta y no Llores led to a second movie:Canasta Uruguaya.
Irma died in Mexico City in 1993.
