Sevad’s sound is a great mix of genres Hip Hop, Reggae and Contemporary R&B and to classify it in any of those singular categories would be a disservice—he’s gifted with the ability to take the best parts of all three and make something natural. “Never Look Back” comes alive with the punchy drums whose rhythm reminds of a breeze off the coast while the grooving guitars, keys, and bass add their respective slight sound. The essentials come from Sevad’s vocals; his ability to infuse the track with an up swell of genuine emotion invigorates the soul.
“Set Good” has an interesting twist: one part orchestral string, one part hype chant and one part rapid fire kick and snare pattern that gives Sevad ample room to build upon. Sevad’s vocals have an undercurrent of Dancehall sensibilities, simple, yet effective in nature, and one that couples feelings of truth and understanding of togetherness. This is a song for the dancers and it guarantees that you’ll break a sweat because Everyday is like Valentine absolutely benefits from Sevad’s ability to create tension-filled songs great for releasing stress on the dance floor.
“Just Can’t Sleep” shows what Sevad can do with a slower tempo: the flute and guitar-driven song compliments his soft and organized crooning to that special someone who helps him sleep better. This song isn’t complex by any means but in that is the beauty; it doesn’t have to be the most complex musical creation because the intention is met with enthusiasm that finds its own pace. That he is able to crisply summarize the spirits of lovers whose hearts are deeply intertwined without ornate language takes skill and knowledge of not only what truly matters but how to communicate that in prose. “Purple Hazing” features Mad Sam in a song constructed from string stabs, a start/stop percussion and light Autotune melodic integration for a fast-paced and enjoyable experience. The breakdown is perfectly sequenced and adds the right amount of tension with Mad Sam riffing through the expanse until he and Sevad’s voices mesh again and the dynamic harmonies diffuse the climax bringing the song to a close. Overall, Sevad’s Everyday is like Valentine fits comfortably with today’s music climate and provides enough substance to require repeat plays. His work is fundamentally sound and it’s clear he knows how to bring the classical into the now.
