Barbara Stanwyck is Ann Mitchell, who just got fired from her newspaper agency. To have one more go before she leaves, she puts up the story of some Mr. John Doe. Doe is going to commit suicide as he is jobless. The agency takes back Ann as well as John Doe (Gary Cooper). The agency gets famous for its action and Ann along with her management use it to their favor. Now, the Doe thing is fast gripping the nation and Ann is caught into it. But all is not well with the management.
