The joint family system is a regional, cultural construct. It has little to no basis in Islam. Nor is there any example from the lives of the Prophet (SAW) or his Sahaba (RA) that this was the norm for them. The elderly parents are the man's or woman's responsibility. Joint family system is the reason behind 99% of psychological problems among Pakistani women.
