The Pope has been up against the wind and the rain in the Philippines, but it has not put off the crowds waiting to greet him in Manila.
Similar weather put a damper on events in the coastal city of Tacloban, where a typhoon killed at least 6,300 people last year.
The Pope said mass in memory of the victims, which include millions left homeless or displaced.
“When I saw from Rome that catastrophe, I felt that I had to be here,” he said. “And in those very days, I decided to come here. I’m here to be with you. A little bit late, I have to say. But I’m here.”
As well as leading mass, the pontiff met with survivors and the families of those killed.
But he had to leave Tacloban four hours early because of the worsening weather.
