Chris from Cate's Garden will answer a question many new composters have: what is a compost thermometer?
Simple answer: it’s a long thermometer, usually 15-20”, that you use to tell how warm or cool your compost heap is.
Why not just use any old thermometer, say, a regular kitchen meats thermometer? Well, that’s simple: they’re just too short! Most compost heaps are 4 feet by 4 feet MINIMUM. To get an accurate temperature, you need to get near the center of your pile.
