Andrei Grachev writes in a new book that he had a sad premonition at the time that Mikhail Gorbachev's dream of a new openness in Soviet life might abruptly end. The putsch would crumble, and Gorbachev would resign a few months later consigning a 74-year-old experiment known as the USSR to history's dust bin. Grachev, Gorbachev's former spokesman and adviser, would go on to become a leading specialist in international relations and author of several books on the rise of a new Russia.
