Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff hopes to capitalise on a slight poll lead as she hits the final straight of campaigning for Sunday’s election.
Described as one of the tightest campaigns in recent years, the media has played up her war with main rival Marina Silva.
The former environment minister has seen her campaign prosper when just a few weeks ago Rousseff was certain to win a second term.
But Aécio Neves, who’s been pushed into third place, is a respected figure within the business community and has recovered in the polls this week.
Around 15,000 police will be deployed to polling stations in the state of Rio de Janeiro alone.
Riot police and special forces have been put on standby in case the bitterness that has marked this campaign spills out onto the streets..
With Rousseff unlikely to achieve 50 percent of Sunday’s vote, the election will almost certainly go to a run off on October 28.
