Obama: ISIL is 'perverting one of the world's greatest religions'

The world must collectively reject what has become a cancer of violent extremism.

That was the message from the US President at the UN General Assembly, where he said militants are “perverting one of the world’s greatest religions”.

He vowed that ISIL must be destroyed and their ideologies exposed.

“The only language understood by killers like this is the language of force,” said Obama. “So the United States of America will work with a broad coalition to dismantle this network of death. In this effort we do not act alone.

“Today I ask the world to join us in this effort. Those who have joined ISIL should leave the battlefield while they can.

“It is time for the world, especially in Muslim communities, to explicitly, forcefully and consistently reject the ideology of organisations like Al-Qaeda and ISIL.”

Our correspondent in New York, Stefan Grobe, reported: “The sudden rise of ISIL has thrust President Obama into the unlikely position as salesman for a conflict he did not want to pursue. But now America is in this for the long haul. This is Obama’s message to the jihadists, the US congress and those who want to succeed him.”
