Chin Strap Turns Chewing And Talking Into Electricity

Scientists have invented a chinstrap device that can generate electricity when the person wearing it chews, or talks.

Researchers from the École de Technologie Supérieure in Montreal, Canada developed a piezoelectric material, called PFC that gets an electric charge from being stretched.

According to the researchers, jaw movement is the most effective way to harness natural energy from the human body.

They had been working to develop cochlear implants, and ear-muffs that are powered by energy from the wearer’s body.

Other tests included using heat from the ear canal, and head movement to generate electricity before they settled on the chin strap idea.

Co-author of the study Aidin Delnavaz is quoted as saying: ‘The power level we achieved is hardly sufficient for powering electrical devices at the moment; however, we can multiply the power output by adding more PFC layers to the chin strap.”

They need to make the material 20 times more efficient before it can create a usable amount of energy.

When the material is able to create more energy it could be used to charge the batteries of phones, or other personal devices.
