Savannah monitor lizards are sometimes kept as pets and generally speaking, they’re known to be pretty docile. However, officers from the Huntington Park Police Department recently captured one that was said to be very ‘aggressive’.

However, officers from the Huntington Park Police Department recently captured one that was said to be quite ‘aggressive’. Police were dispatched to the scene after a call came in from a concerned resident, who referred to the creature as an ‘alligator.’

Officers believe the reptile is actually a savannah monitor lizard. Three cops responded and located the 3-foot long beast.

They later posted on the department Facebook page the "reptile.. clearly was not native to this area. The large and very aggressive reptile was safely captured and transported to the local animal shelter.”

The responding officers used a noose to catch the lizard. Eventually they were able to place it in a cardboard box and transport it to the shelter.

It’s unclear if the reptile has an owner and how it got out to freely roam around the neighborhood.

Savannah monitor lizards aren’t known to be active creatures and typically take well to regular human handling. The one captured in Huntington Park seems to be a rare exception.
