A floating restaurant called The Waterfront located in Covington, Kentucky is sinking into the Ohio River.

It opened in 1996 at a dock on the other side of the river from Cincinnati, Ohio.

According to messages from former customers, there were some fond memories made at the floating restaurant, but there had also been various problems over the years.

The owner of the restaurant, Jeff Ruby, is quoted as saying: “We’ve been hit by runaway barges. We’ve been hit by a tugboat. We’ve been hit by a runaway iceberg, I almost lost an employee last year when an iceberg hit us.”

Ruby finally decided to close the restaurant after an incident in March of 2011, when the restaurant floated a hundred feet away from the dock with dozens of people onboard.

He was planning to sell some of the individual pieces of the boat for scrap before it came loose, and partially sank into the river.

The cause of the Waterfront sinking is still unknown, but Ruby says he thinks it was probably a barge that ran into the structure two weeks ago.

There are plans to reopen the restaurant at a location on dry land that still has a view of the river.
