Israel announces withdrawal of troops from Gaza Strip

Israel has announced it is withdrawing all of its ground forces from Gaza.

It follows an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. The truce is set to last for three days.

It’s hoped that delegates from both sides will use that time to continue negotiations in Cairo to find a longer term deal.

Israel says its main aim – to destroy militants’ tunnels – has been achieved and that troops would be redeployed in “defensive positions” outside the Gaza Strip

The possibility of aerial bombardment on both sides remains.

The four-week war in Gaza has killed more than 1,800 Palestinians and 67 Israelis. It has also displaced more than one quarter of Gaza’s 1.8 million population and seen 3,000 homes destroyed.
