A small dog in Dickinson, Texas is left paralyzed after going to great lengths to save a little boy’s life. On Friday, Shannon Long’s 3-year-old grandson had been in her backyard when a neighbor’s dog broke through the fence and approached the child.

Long’s Yorkie, Ezio also saw what was going on and immediately sprang into action. The 11-pound pooch charged towards the much-bigger dog.

Long described the confrontation stating “The dog was 10 times the size of Ezio.. The dog is ferocious. So he picks Ezio by his neck and lifts him and shakes and shakes and shakes and throws him down.”

Ezio lost the fight, but he was able to prevent the toddler from getting hurt. Ezio was left with a broken neck, spinal cord and trachea.

The Long family rushed the injured dog to the vet. They emptied their bank accounts to scrounge up the $5,000 needed to save his life.

Unfortunately veterinarians say it will cost another10 grand to assist him in walking again. Aside from the financial troubles and the uncertainty of Ezio’s future, Long is happy to have such a loyal pooch and her grandson hopes to play with him again very soon.

As for the other dog, an animal control officer says nothing can be done unless the aggressive pet injures a child or kills another animal.
