With the 2014 FIFA World Cup soccer championship approaching, all eyes are on Brazil, but a fair number are simultaneously fixed on Nelly, an elephant living in Germany.

It appears she has quite a knack for predicting sports match winners.

Nelly had her first big success in 2006 when she correctly forecasted many of the women’s FIFA World Cup outcomes.

After that, she went on to call numerous match results in both the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the UEFA Euro 2012.

So far, her outlook for her adopted country has Germany in a tie with Portugal and but beating both the United States and Ghana to move out of the first round.

Nelly’s process is pretty straightforward.

She’s given a ball and the option of two goals, each of which has a team flag and country name assigned to it.

Using her trunk, Nelly then puts the ball in the net of the one she feels will emerge as the victor.

Her ascent into the ranks of renowned animal oracles doesn’t come without some sad news, however.

Prior to her becoming the go-to predictor of soccer match winners and losers, that job belonged to an octopus named Paul.

Sadly, Paul the Octopus passed away in the fall of 2010.
