Google Plans Ads in Products Like Thermostats

If the future that Google predicts comes to pass, people will one day be seeing advertisements in all sorts of weird places.

Among them are thermostats, refrigerators, and watches.

That glimpse of days to come was provided in a letter the company wrote to the Securities and Exchange Commission in December 2013.

In it, Google was stating its case for not having to differentiate their ad revenue based on device platform such as mobile or desktop.

Their argument was that with the definition of ‘mobile’ continuing to expand, isolating it as a category doesn’t make good sense at this time.

The letter also stated, “Our expectation is that users will be using our services and viewing our ads on an increasingly wide diversity of devices in the future.”

No specific plans for any one of the devices suggested are known, but it’s guessed that thermostats may be on the short list.

The company recently acquired Nest Labs, Inc., manufacturers of smart temperature controllers and smoke alarms, for just over 3 billion dollars.

They’ve also begun to establish partnerships with automakers and have made their smart eyeglasses available to the public, while supplies last.
