A pair of twins was born holding hands at Akron General Medical Center in Ohio, just in time for Mother’s Day.

The identical twin girls were born with a rare condition called monoamniotic or mono mono, where they share an amniotic sac and placenta.

This happens when the embryo doesn’t split until more that eight days after fertilization, and it can increase the risk of twins having tangled umbilical chords, which is fatal for some unborn children.

Doctor Melissa Mancuso, who assisted in the delivery of the twins, is quoted as saying: “We were just having a discussion about how difficult a decision it is to make, weighing the risk of prematurity versus the risks of entanglement. She was excited about having her C-section on May 9 because she would be a 'real mother' on Mothers' Day.”

After 33 weeks of pregnancy, the two twin sisters were born at less than five pounds each.

According to estimates from doctors, mono mono only happens in about one out of every ten thousand pregnancies.

In a statistically unlikely coincidence, another woman in Akron, Ohio with a mono mono pregnancy has reportedly been admitted to the same hospital.
