A 12-year-old girl is in the midst of a weight loss journey with the desired end result being overall health and happiness. Alexis Shapiro is the child in question and she certainly hasn’t had an easy life

Alexis was diagnosed with a rare metabolic condition, which caused her to put on over 150 pounds. Making matters even worse, she was always hungry and doctors concluded she had type 2 diabetes.

Medical authorities and her family decided the best way to help Alexis was for her to undergo surgery. On March 21st, doctors performed sleeve gastrectomy surgery which shrunk her stomach to one fourth of its former size.

Since the operation, Alexis was placed on a diet of mushy food and is down six pounds. According to her mom, Jenny, she’s more active and her overall attitude is better.

Amplifying the promising results, she is now off insulin and her diabetes is almost gone. Doctors hope Alexis, who stands 4 feet 7 inches tall, will lose a total of 50 pounds.

Two years ago, she underwent surgery pertaining to a benign brain tumor. Right after the operation, she developed hypothalamic obesity and unfortunately, the family’s insurance refused to foot the bill for any related medical procedures.

A Go Fund Me campaign was launched to help Alexis and Netizens contributed over 85 grand, which allowed her to get the recent, potentially life-saving operation.
