They're biodegradable, made of papyrus and recycled paper, and cost much less than their commercially-made Western counterparts: MakaPads, alternative sanitary pads invented by engineering professor Moses Musaazi. Only a few years ago, girls in Uganda had to miss school on days when they were menstruating because they couldn't afford commercial sanitary pads, and women’s lives were restricted for the same reason. MakaPads are now providing an affordable alternative.
