Lisbon is considered a dream city. But for residents like Jorge and Maria, they are fighting for survival in a highly competitive housing market.
Transcript
00:00George can't afford his own flat. Maria is forced to live in a tin shack. Both work, but neither has
00:07the money to pay Lisbon's high rents.
00:11I was practically expelled from the neighborhood where I live, and now I feel expelled from Lisbon.
00:18It's just a house that I can pay my salary. It's just that I need.
00:24Since 2020, rents have risen by 42% in Portugal's capital.
00:30The proportion of income that residents spend on rent is among the highest in Europe.
00:36One reason? Lisbon has become a tourist hotspot. Flats are increasingly being used as holiday apartments.
00:44The influx of digital nomads and expats has made the situation even worse.
00:51George has taken to the streets to fight for the right to housing.
00:55And this is our goal, to press the government, to make them move and look for the housing as a
01:02national emergency problem.
01:03We feel the confidence that we can do a change, that we can transform this market, transform this market today,
01:14transform this market into what is, in fact, the right, the right of having a house to live.
01:19Maria has also joined demonstrations.
01:22It's a struggle for my favor. In the name of the housing.
01:26It's the same place.
01:28We can't get to the right.
01:31We can't get to the right.
01:32We can't get to the right.
01:34Portugal has little social housing compared to some other European countries.
01:39At the same time, the luxury poverty market is booming.
01:43George ended up in a spare room at a friend's house.
01:48Maria lives in an informal settlement on the outskirts of Lisbon.
01:53Lisbon may be a dream city for some, but for those without the means, it has little to offer.
