You never know what seemingly small item will come in handy when you least expect it. A bus driver in Dayton, Ohio was recently shot at; however he was able to survive thanks to a tiny religious book he stored in his pocket.

49-year-old Rick Wagoner had been working at the time of the incident. He stopped on the side of the road during his morning route because the bus broke down.

All of a sudden, three males approached him. The men were wearing hoodies and had blue bandanas covering their faces. They uttered a few words to Wagoner and shortly thereafter the suspects brandished a weapon and started fighting with the bus driver.

Wagoner was shot three times. One of the rounds struck his leg while the other two hit him in the chest. Unbelievably those two potentially fatal chest shots were stopped by the New Testament book, titled ‘The Message’ which he kept in his shirt pocket.

During a struggle Wagoner was able to wrestle the gun away from the suspects. He even managed to stab one of them with a pen, but in the end all three men were able to get away from the scene.

Wagoner, who believes the attack was a random act of gang violence, is now recovering in the hospital.
