You never know what you'll stumble upon while taking an innocent stroll on the beach. Last month, a family discovered a huge jellyfish that washed ashore in southern Tasmania. It measured nearly 5 feet in diameter.

The bizarre sight turned out to be rather significant. Local scientists have known about this jellyfish species for a good amount of time. However the jellies do not yet have a name or classification.

Lisa-ann Gershwin of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation said “We finally got specimens this year of it, so it's new to science..... It's one of these things that really makes us come face-to-face with the fact that there are things we don't know about out there in nature, particularly in the ocean.”

Gershwin suspected the newest jellyfish could be the biggest ever seen in the area. It was found resting on the sand belly up.

In general, the species all share the same raggedy resemblance. They have a circular shape with an outline that looks similar to a mop on the underside.
