A man in Bracebridge, Ontario has been accused of brutally killing a black bear. While the motive remains unclear, the 41-year-old unidentified male reportedly struck the animal with his car and then got out of the vehicle and proceeded to strike the bear over and over again with a rock.

According to workers with the SPCA , the incident occurred on November 3rd of this year. The man has since been charged with intentionally causing an animal to be in distress along with killing the bear inhumanely.

Since the killing, a senior SPCA inspector has come forward, asking members of the public to contact police during any encounter with a wild animal, especially if the creature is hit on the road.

The inspector stated “If the animal needs to be humanely euthanized, police services are trained to respond to the needs of the situation.” The man is scheduled to appear in Bracebridge court at the end of January.
