A 22-year-old man in New Jersey was killed by a black bear while hiking through a nature preserve. The victim has been identified as Darsh Patel.

According to West Milford police, Patel had been with four of his friends when they encountered the animal which was estimated to be about 300 pounds and 4 years old.

The companions were terrified and all ran off in different directions. They later regrouped and realized Patel was missing. His friends contacted police.

After about 2 hours of searching, Patel’s body was discovered. Evidence revealed the victim had likely been attacked by a bear. One found near the scene was captured and euthanized.

Local police along with state wildlife officials have opened up an investigation into the case, with tests being conducted to determine if the euthanized bear is the one that killed Patel. The attack occurred in The Apshawa Preserve, which is a 576-acre site that attracts both hikers and bird watchers.

However, an encounter with bears is always a possibility, given that sightings have been reported in all of New Jersey’s counties. State officials have advised people of what to do in the event of crossing paths with a bear.

They’re urged to avoid eye contact and slowly back away instead of running.
